What Every Travelling Woman Needs | A FUD

I’m so so excited!

Whats in the box? What’s in the box?

After just under a year of using the GoGirl out in the bush and on holidays, I finally picked up my long awaited FUD box at the post office today.

So, what’s in the box?

My new FUD.

What the heck is a FUD you ask?

Female Urinary Device.  Eeeek you cringe?!

I cringed and laughed when I first heard about them.

Well, I’d much rather be standing than squatting or placing my delicate bits close to some dirty unhygienic toilet.  Remember I don’t reach 5 foot so my bits are closer to those dirty toilets than yours , also I don’t want to run the risk of a bull ant biting me on  the behind if I was squatting in the bush 🙂

Basically, it’s a funnel looking device that allows a female to go to the toilet standing like a man. There are many variations of FUDs around but the uses are plenty.

I have to say when I first used one, there’s a little bit of performance anxiety that occurs. It took a while for my brain to kick in, that I would be whizzing standing up.

I’m especially excited to have it now given that my Everest Base Camp trek is only less than 60 days away.

FUD Uses

My Old FUD : GoGirl

What I liked about it

  • its flexible and fold-able and you can easily stow it in your pocket, it also comes in a small tube that you can store it in.
  • not that colour matters but it comes in camo (which is great if you are out in the bush because you don’t want to stand out and let the world know you’re having a whizz) , and the other colour is pink.

I have three GoGirls.  The reason being is because each time we moved house my GoGirl disappeared so I had to get a new on. Then one day I found all of them. So now I have three.  I don’t need three of course. Maybe one for the car, one for the handbag and one for the backpack? I’m not a handbag kind of girl either so that won’t work. It’s not as if you can sell them on Gumtree is it?!

Hmmm, I wonder how would the advertisement read :

Slightly used pink FUD GoGirl , in excellent condition, near new , used twice only.

Yes, somehow I don’t think so!

Anyway, back the to GoGirl.

What I don’t like about it

  • the one and only thing I don’t like about it is that you cant really tell if you have a good seal and there is a fear that maybe , just maybe you haven’t created a tight enough seal (because its so flexible) and you just might wet your pants!
  • The way I see it, it defeats the purpose of using this to go to the toilet, you may as well squat.
  • They also recommend that you practice in the shower, which I did but then I thought to myself, in reality when you are taking a whizz, you are not completely nude are you? So, yes practicing in the shower was a cinch but in the world outside your bathroom it wasn’t as easy.
  • Also each time when I was out in the bush, hiking, I had my behind exposed because I couldn’t just slip it into my pants because of its flexibility and softness, and my uncertainty that I had a tight enough seal.  I felt rather vulnerable and exposed.  Maybe I’m too much of a princess when it comes to doing a whizz in the outdoors.

My New FUD : Freshette

So, let me tell you about my new FUD.  Its called the Freshette.  And after many nights of researching on the net and reading a ton of reviews I decided on getting the Freshette. Why?  because unlike the GoGirl ,which was ok to use but the silicon although made it easier to store because of its its flexible and fold-able, created a tight and certain seal. And there were a lot of  female rock climbers and military women who swear by them . In fact , one woman in the military said they were all issued with one.

What I like about it

  • everything!
  • It creates a tight certain seal.  I know I’m not going to wet myself
  • I had a big smile on my the first time I used it in the public toilets because it worked!  I felt like telling everyone that came out of the toilet , but of course I didn’t.  If I did I’d be considered to be “that crazy Asian woman who wants to talk enthusiastically about her whizzing habits to strangers in the toilet”
  • the tube that extends out slides back into the funnel

What I don’t like about it

  • nothing yet, I don’t anticipate anything either
  • actually if  I had to pick something, it would be that its harder plastic and its not fold-able, but that’s the reason why you get such a good seal and have to confidence to just let go and go.

So there you have it.  There are plenty of FUDs out there you just have to find the right one for you.  And I have found my FUD and I’m very happy!

A few simple tips that I have learnt from my research :

  • use sanitiser gel to clean when you are out and place it in the seal-able bag provided (that’s if you can’t find somewhere to clean it)
  • and if you are out in the bush and carrying extra tissues or toilet paper is cumbersome then use a pantie liner when you are out hiking. It makes sense to me and such a handy tip.  I can’t remember where I read it but I like the idea.

Go forth, and FUD with confidence, Happy FUDing!

If you have tried out other FUDs please share your thoughts here.
